Critical Pedagogy
Reviving Ophelia |
Mary Pipher's "Reviving Ophelia" brings attention to the obstacles that young women face at the middle level age both among their peers and due to the content that media is displaying. Acknowledging unrealistic expectations verses reality is critical in the middle level classroom. The ability to question and come up with unique perspectives creates a sense of empowerment, as well as gain confidence in oneself. Establishing healthy ideology is a priceless factor, especially when taking note of the popular culture content that students are exposed to on a daily basis. |
Mickey Mouse Monopoly
"Mickey Mouse Monopoly" provides a new perspective on one of the most influential markets for adolescents- Disney. Almost every household in America has some sort of Disney content and it is commonly overlooked that the storylines marketed as magical fairytales display incredibly sexist and racist claims. It is important as educators to be aware of the content we show. What seems to be innocent may have underlying meanings that should be addressed to further establish a safe space. Students should be exposed to content in which they identify with representation of themselves in a positive light. If students see themselves represented only in negative manners, they will begin to see themselves that way, and as educators it is our responsibility to be aware of this. |
